An afterschool care completely run by men

A group of boys roar with joy as they let handfuls of marbles roll down a self-built, wooden marble track. “It’s usually a bit quieter around here. But the marble track was a gift from Sinterklaas, so it's still thé thing to play with," says Titiaan Benders (37). He’s been the owner of after school care center Het Schuitengat for five years now.

"Okay, time to put away the marbles and put on our coats, we're going outside," announces his colleague Max de Vrieze (28). Every day they take the kids into The Hague’s nature. Rain or shine. After a short ride in huge electric cargo bikes, they arrive in the dunes of the Westduinpark. The children run, climb, laugh and are chased by a seemingly tireless Max. They observe some plants and a bird of prey that flies by. “Isn’t this amazing?,” laughs Titiaan. ,,I always tell my friends, I get paid to play outside!”.

Men are still underrepresented in the field of childcare. But not in this afterschool care in Scheveningen. Here, all employees are male.
